DPE Restructure 2024 - A Definitive Deep Dive

By

Sep 2, 2024

Hey Mortals,

This expanded DPE restructuring breakdown is meant to be the single source of truth for all DPE information and calculations going forward. DPE is a complex topic, but we want to make sure we’re as transparent as possible about how it works when we make changes.

Below, we cover why we’ve revamped DPE, all the relevant formulas, and provide examples so that you can better understand why you’re earning what you’re earning. Let’s dig in.

Summary

Three major changes were simultaneously implemented on 8/20/2024 that impact the daily play and earn (P2E) system:

  1. Gameplay Modifier update changing the “curve” of impact from ranks 1-12
  2. Updated P2E formula for Fragments
  3. New overall multiplier introduced through which game modes can have different weights

These changes were implemented to correct for several long standing issues that may not have been readily apparent to most players. Specifically, they were meant to:

  • Significantly reduce bot activity & extraction
    • “Players” that are actually just running scripts.
    • Almost exclusively ranks 1-6 with shiny decks.
  • Discourage deranking
    • Players camping in lower ranks with mediocre ultra shiny decks.
    • Historically these players earn more daily $GODS than top mythics.
  • Incentivize players to rank up and play at ranks commiserate with their knowledge, skills and abilities
    • This will take some time to play through – possibly two or more weeks
    • As seasoned players strive to once again climb the ladder, wins will come more easily for new players
  • The overall multiplier was created to encourage maximum participation in the newest mode(s).

Gameplay Modifier Changes

The changes made to the gameplay modifier will affect EVERYONE who plays Gods Unchained.  How it impacts you personally, will differ by your in-game rank. The highest impact here is that P2E is now effectively turned off for ranks 1-6.

Lift = the increase received from promoting to that level.

Rank 7 (twilight shadow) received a significant nerf and all higher ranks experienced an increase in gameplay modifier. The overall pitch of the increase is now sharper. This means the gameplay benefit of obtaining ranks 8, 9 and 10 will be higher than they were previously.

The earning gap between ranks 11 and 12 has been tightened, and rank 12 remains the pinnacle of the P2E experience. These changes will affect the number of Fragments earned by mortals. However, we also have a….

Updated Fragment Formula

Terms have changed a little bit from the previous adaptation of P2E. We now have the following:

  • Economic Fragments = if rank > 6 then 100 * deck collection modifier if not then 0.00
  • Skill Fragments = if rank > 6 then 100 * win rate modifier if not then 0.00
  • Booster = multiplier for the first X number of wins = current 2x for the first 3 wins daily
  • Rank Modifier = the curve from the previous section (e.g. 1.00 for mythic, rank 12)
  • Game Mode Modifier = multiplier for the mode you played = 1.0 for normal
  • Deck Collection Modifier = same as the old formula (explained below)
  • Win Rate Modifier = new lookup table similar to the rank curve (also explained below)

Deck Collection Modifier

  • Deck Composition: 1 Diamond, 3 Gold, 10 Shadow, 16 Meteorite
  • Deck Value = (Card Quantity x Card Quality Value)
  • Deck Value = (1 x 125) + (3 x 25) + (10 x 5) + (16 x 1) = 266
  • Normalized Deck Value= Deck Value / Full Diamond Deck Value
  • Normalized Deck Value = 266 / 3750 = 0.07093
  • Deck Collection Modifier = Normalized Deck Value x (1 - Minimum Quality Boost) + Minimum Quality Boost
  • Deck Collection Modifier = 0.07093 x (1 - 0.15) + 0.15 = 0.21029
  • Deck Collection Modifier = 21.029%

Win Rate Modifier

This is calculated AFTER the match concludes. Therefore, with a win, the worst this can be is one win = 0.01 modifier.

All of this rolls up to the new master Fragment calculation:

(Economic Fragments * Skill Fragments) * Booster * Rank Modifier * Game Mode Modifier

Say our hero is rank 8, with the same deck outlined in the Deck Collection Modifier explanation, and they just won their first game playing Ranked! Then:

  • Deck Collection Modifier = 21.029%
  • Economic Fragments = 100 * 21.029% = 21.0293
  • Skill Fragments = 100 * 0.01 = 1.0000 • Booster = 2.00
  • Rank Modifier = 0.48
  • Game Mode Modifier = 1.0

Fragments = (21.0293 * 1.0000) * 2 * 0.48 * 1.0 = 20.18816

This is a significant reduction in the total number of Fragments under the old system.

The changes are much more noticeable at a lower rank with a mostly plain deck. With a deck composed mainly of plain cards, players will hardly earn Fragments (aka shards) under the new system.

Earning $GODS

Remember, these changes are affecting Fragments. Your daily $GODS earned are calculated as follows:

Your Fragments / Everybody’s Fragments * Daily $GODS Pool = Your $GODS

While it’s tons of fun to look at your Fragments, what is most important is your pro-rata share of ALL the Fragments. There are some factors beyond individual player control that will impact a player’s final $GODS earnings. Factors such as:

  • Number of people playing GU
  • Number of total games played
  • The rank distribution of games played
  • Shine of players’ cards
  • Number of games played in new modes with the new modifiers

Just because your daily Fragments decreased under the new system does not necessarily mean that your $GODS will also decrease or change proportionally.

New Multiplier for Fragments!

To strongly encourage interaction with the newest game mode(s), Fragment multiplier functionality has been added. These are adjustable and could range from 1.2 to 2x for new modes. The overall effect of this on your daily earnings remains to be seen. If the mode is extremely popular and has “everyone” playing it, then anyone using the standard format (1.0x) as their P2E choice will be disadvantaged when it comes to their pro-rata share of the daily community Fragments.

If the mode is universally rejected – meaning no one interacts with it – then the multiplier will have virtually no effect on you since no one is scoring with it. Overall, we expect 45% of players (higher at mythic, lower at other ranks) to pivot to the new mode to score the bonus multiplier. These players would then earn more Fragments, and thus more $GODS, than those who stayed behind. Those staying behind will then be pulling in a lower share of the total daily $GODS and thus will receive less $GODS even if they score the same number of Fragments that they have grown accustomed to receiving.

Change Summary

These changes are focused on rewarding dedicated players intent on climbing, and will more proportionally reward players rank 8 and up. Thus, new players will need to fully concentrate on ranking up to at least rank 7 to get access to Fragments and P2E features.

There will most likely be a paradigm shift away from collecting the cheapest diamond cards and throwing together a winning deck for ranks 5, 6, 7, towards using the best deck you can muster to climb to the highest rank possible.

The changes negatively impact roughly one third of players (ranks 1-7). We hope this change inspires rank 7 players to improve to rank 8 (and beyond), and galvanize players camping at lower ranks to climb the ladder as well.

The change in the daily Fragment calculation will be the most noticeable change, as players are now scoring significantly less than they were pre-change. Keep in mind this affects everyone. Therefore, given the same number of total players and distribution across ranks, the community Fragments will be less as well. The important thing is that you maintain your same pro-rata share of all Fragments. The best methods for earning are now:

  1. Upgrade plain cards to at least meteorite
  2. Promote – there is no longer an incentive to play at a lower rank for 20% more wins
    1. Make it to at least rank 8 for earning
    2. Meta meteorite cards are now possibly better than the cheapest diamond cards
  3. WIN - You still want to shoot for at least a 50%-win rate
  4. Score your wins in the mode with the highest multiplier
  5. Study and understand the formulas – know where your Fragments come from

Best of luck!
